Race RULES

The HBBA Soap Box Derby will take place on Main Street, High Bridge, on Saturday, June 14th at 8am.  Registration will begin at 7am.

The races will be two opponents side-by-side down Main Street against each other.  The starting line will be at the intersection of Main and Church Streets, and the finish line will be at the intersection of Main and McDonald Streets.

This is a double-elimination tournament.  The winner of each race advances to the next round, while the loser of the race proceeds to the "consolation bracket."  Once a racer loses a race in the consolation bracket, they are eliminated from the competition. (Or, simply put, racers keep racing until they've lost two races).

The first person to cross the finish line wins.  There will be no timings.  The "Finish Line Judge" will have final judgment on the winner of the race, and their ruling is final.

Cars must be built by the Racers and their parents/guardians.  The cars must abide by the following specifications:

  • Must have 4 wheels

  • Must have a steering mechanism

  • Must have a braking mechanism

  • For the 8-12 year olds, the combined weight of the car/driver cannot exceed 200 lbs.

  • For the 12-16 year olds, the combined weight of the car/driver cannot exceed 230 lbs.

  • The drivers MUST WEAR HELMETS AND GOGGLES.

The look/shape/color/design of the car is completely up to the Racer and the Racer's parents/guardian(s).  Be as creative as you like, as long as it complies to the specifications set forth above.

An inspection will take place at a designated time/place approximately 1 week prior to the race.  At this time, the cars will be inspected and weighed, and the drivers will be weighed, to verify compliance with specifications.

Trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place, and Most-Original and Best Looking cars in both classes.
